Meredith Mitchell, Volunteer Educator from Gulfport, MS
The week that I spent in Jamaica was the most rewarding experience of my life. I am truly blessed to have been able to work with such amazing people. Working with these children has renewed my spirits as an educator and I cannot wait to be able to work with all of the children in the near future. Use all of the strengths that you have to the best of your ability. If you do, you will truly be rewarded.

"In any situation, the best thing you can do is the right thing; the next best thing you can do is
the wrong thing; the worst thing you can do is nothing." - Theodore Roosevelt |

It was interesting to see to what extent an illness or injury can impact the daily lives of a Jamaican person. A "simple" shoulder injury could mean someone is unable to wash their clothes, cook, or harvest their fields. It gave my job as a physical therapist much more meaning and importance to give these people the treatment they needed in order to participate in their every day lives.

It was amazing to me how welcoming the community members were and how quickly we were able to form relationships and make personal connections. The valuable life lessons I learned from working in the clinic and in the community have continued to shape my life since returning home. Their rich and diverse culture widens your scope of cultural awareness and heightens your sense of appreciation for life's simple treasures. It is an opportunity I hope everyone will experience. |
